Mapping

Published:2020.03.18

You are required to make one (or more) plane map by SuperMap software with free topic selection. You can create a unique thematic map through data processing and mapping based on multiple data resources. It will be an opportunity to show your ability of geographic information processing and visual expression.

Entry Requirements

General

1 Works must be original and conform to the open source rules. The copyright always belongs to the original author while the Contest Committee has the right to make public.

2 All the participants should be responsible for the copyright. If works involve reference or quote, please indicate at the end of the reports. Otherwise, the Contest Committee will hold the right to cancel the awards and withdraw the bonuses and certificates of prizes due to infringement reasons.

Software

All the works must be base on SuperMap iDesktop or SuperMap iDesktopX with the version of 10i SP1 or above.

Data

1 The data used in the entries can be the map data published by nations or relevant organizations, or the big data or other source data provided by Internet enterprises.

2 Please ensure the legitimacy of the data source and the right of using and releasing data.

3 The map content shall conform to the relevant policies and laws of each country, and shall fully represent the territory of each country.

Mapping

1 Maps should be attractive, professional and with strong visual appeal.

2 Map display should be smooth. The performance of map display affects the user experience directly, which is one of the important indicators of the map.

Judging Criteria

Item Requirement Score
Data(35) Data layering is reasonable and standard with no topology error, such as: suspended line, non-closed polygon, broken polygon, etc. 15
Using data source and working space correctly, and optimizing file data source and set data coordinate system correctly. 15
Using different scale data correctly. 5
Map(50) Fine production with appropriate selection of symbols, lines, filling and other resources to meet the requirements of the map. 10
Thematic maps are made properly and correctly. 15
Map color conforms to the using habit. 10
Optimize the map display effect and operation speed. 15
Work performance(15) The document is of clear description, which are able to explain the data organization and mapping process. 10
The video demo (no more than 15 minutes) is required to show the highlights of the work with subtitles in English, which can be accompanied by voice explanation and PPT presentation. Videos need to be submitted to YouTube. 5
Extra score(10) Using the SuperMap iDesktopX deployed on the Linux platform to display the map and recording the process of running SuperMap iDesktopX product on the Linux platform to browse the map. The judging of the result will be based on the display effect, with a maximum of 10 extra scores. 10

Process Reference (suggestion only)

1 Data preparation

1.1 Convert vector data of other formats into SuperMap data format.

1.2 Layer those data through data query and copy.

1.3 Vectorize the data based on image.

2 Data processing

2.1 Conduct topological check on vector data and correct errors.

   2.2 Fuse vector data.

   2.3 Data thinning through resampling.

2.4 Obtain data of other specified types through type conversion.

2.5 Obtain buffer range of data through buffer analysis.

2.6 Extract isolines and isosurfaces from raster data.

3 Map rendering

3.1 Preset points, lines and filling symbols through symbol editor.

   3.2 Set styles for layers.

3.3 Make thematic maps to provide richer styles.

3.4 Optimize label display effect through label avoidance and labeling along the line.

3.5 One dataset can be added to the map for multiple times to improve the display effect of the map.

3.6 The layer grouping function can be used to uniformly manage the layers of the same map.

4 Improve browsing experience

4.1 Cancel map editing, selection, capture and other status.

4.2 Set fixed scale for the map.

4.3 Set the displayable scale for layers, which not only conforms to the drawing specification, but also can be hidden while unnecessary to improve the browsing performance.

4.4 Different display scales use different scales data. Smaller scales contains fewer data nodes, which can have higher browsing efficiency.

4.5 Balance aesthetics and performance through anti-aliasing control of layers.

4.6 Search for the poor performance layers to analyzed the reasons and carried out optimization processing through the performance diagnosis function of SuperMap iDesktop.

Submission

1 Submit the original data and processing data (generated in map making process).

2 Submit data description documents in .PDF format, including introduction of original data (such as data source, data content description), introduction of result data (such as layer explanation, meaning of attribute field).

3 Submit all maps you made (as .JPG or .PNG format).

4 Submit mapping report, including data processing notes, mapping process notes, and map performance optimization notes (optional).

5 Submit attractive screenshots (at least three) (as .JPG or .PNG format) and an instruction video (no more than 15 minutes with subtitles in English. It needs to be uploaded to YouTube).

6 Submit a self-evaluation document of the work by the instructor. The document is submitted in .PDF format (Requirements: concise and clear; 100-200 words). If there is no instructor, then no need to submit.

7 All the files required need to be submitted as compressed files in .ZIP format.

8 Structure of submission files:
